Alex Marvez's weekly look at professional wrestling
By ALEX MARVEZ
Thursday, November 02, 2006
World Wrestling Entertainment fans know where to find Jim Ross every Monday night, but it isn't hard to track down the storied announcer on Saturdays in the fall.
Ross is such a die-hard University of Oklahoma football fan that he tries to attend every contest on the Sooners' schedule.
Which James Toney will show up Saturday?
By DAVID A. AVILA
Tuesday, November 21, 2006
Riding the tip of the heavyweight tornado, James "Lights Out" Toney may seem like a madman with his tempestuous remarks and quick blowups, but he's really a softie ...
Seminoles' aware of Canes' woes
By DEREK REDD
If there's one thing the annual Florida State-Miami clash generates, it's talk.
It fills newspapers, dominates airwaves and bombards message boards.
Most of the talk this year emanates from Miami.
And so begins another Rockies' revamp
By DAVE KRIEGER
It didn't feel much like April, but the Colorado Rockies' 2007 season began Wednesday night, Aug. 30 by the calendar but a stroke past midnight for the surprisingly popular mirage of '06.
Auburn will win it all in 2006
By JOHN TUCKER
W-a-a-a-y too much blather about Notre Dame, Charlie (three Super Bowl rings) Weis and the "Mighty Quinn'' recapturing college football's Holy Grail this season.
The hype docs must be working around the clock.
No doubt those Weis revival meetings in South Bend are awe-inspiring affairs _ "win just thirteen for the Gipper.''
And by now, Notre Dame's "9-3 isn't good enough'' slogan has probably been instilled in the mind of practically every "Touchdown Jesus'' worshipper across America.
After the previous decade of mediocrity, 9-3 isn't good enough?
The bigger question is, will 11-2 be good enough? Cause that's about as good as it's going to get for the Irish in 2006-07.
Football's mid-majors throw down gauntlet
By BRYANT-JON ANTEOLA
Pat Hill didn't write the mantra "Anybody, anywhere, anytime."
The Fresno State coach just says it more than most football coaches, and his teams try to back him up with strong performances.
Usually it's used as a challenge to teams from Bowl Championship Series conferences that appear to be avoiding the Bulldogs.
But other mid-major programs _ particularly in the Western Athletic Conference _ are latching on to the challenge.
Hatred of BYU stings for native of Beehive State
By GREG HANSEN
At lunch Tuesday, I asked two Missouri grads if they actively hate any sports teams.
"Kansas!" they said, an echo of some force. "Hate 'em."
They proceeded to tell me why, including a story about Missouri fans throwing empty whiskey bottles at the Kansas band.

Hard-working Fluellen aims for greatness at FSU
By DEREK REDD
Florida State defensive tackle Andre Fluellen sounds like a pessimist.
"I tell the guys every day, in terms of sheer God-given ability, I'm probably the least talented guy in the room," he said.
Actually, he's a realist.
He sees other Florida State defensive linemen who are bigger, stronger, maybe faster.
George emerges as the quarterback who wouldn't die
By JOHN MCGRATH
Jeff George is my hero.
As quarterbacks go, he's never drawn comparisons to Bart Starr's poise, or Joe Montana's moxie, or Bob Griese's brains, or Roger Staubach's resourcefulness, or John Elway's passion.
