Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress.
The 29-year-old defeated Republican Anthony Pappas in New York's 14th congressional district, after unseating long-term incumbent Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley in the June primary.
The former community organizer ran to the left of Crowley and is a self-described democratic socialist, who has called for Medicare for all, among other initiatives.
Registered Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans in the district, and it has been in Democratic control for more than 20 years.
