Judge Blocks Most Of DOJ's Suit Against California Sanctuary Laws

A federal judge has blocked most of the Trump administration's attempts to overrule California's so-called sanctuary immigration policies.

The Justice Department sued the state over three laws that protect undocumented immigrants from federal agents and deportation. The DOJ claimed those laws were unconstitutional.

But the Sacramento-based judge disagreed, for the most part. In his ruling, he said California's desire not to help the federal government wasn't the same as the state "standing in the way" of the Trump administration.

The judge did block part of one law, though, that banned private employers from cooperating with immigration agents of their own free will. He also ruled private employers had the right to re-verify an employee's legal work status.
