Rep. Maxine Waters has called off two appearances scheduled for this weekend after she says she received multiple threats over her efforts to encourage public protests of the Trump administration.

According to CNN, Waters said in a statement Thursday she canceled events in Texas and Alabama after getting threatening messages and "hostile mail," including "one very serious death threat."

Waters has faced backlash from Republicans and Democrats alike since she called on her supporters to confront Trump administration officials in public places and "push back on them."

Trump fired back at the Democratic congresswoman on Twitter, calling her "an extraordinarily low IQ person" and writing "be careful what you wish for."

Waters' office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the alleged threats.
