Sarah Palin is suing The New York Times over an editorial it published earlier this month.

Titled "America's Lethal Politics," the editorial was published after House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot while practicing for a congressional baseball game.

To further its point that politics can incite violence, the editorial portrayed Palin as responsible for the 2011 shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords in Tucson, Arizona.

The Times' editorial board originally said Palin's political action committee released a map prior to the shooting featuring crosshairs over Democratic lawmakers.

The Times later issued a correction after many pointed out the map actually showed electoral districts, saying "no such link was established" between it and the shooting.

But Palin's defamation lawsuit says the correction, which doesn't explicitly reference her, was "woefully insufficient."

The lawsuit focuses on the knowledge of the Times' editorial board. It points out the publication's previous articles "demonstrated that there was no direct and clear link between Mrs. Palin and [the shooter's] heinous acts."

Palin is seeking more than $75,000 in damages. A spokeswoman for the Times says it "will defend against any claim vigorously."
