The state of Tennessee will again be a battleground for a U.S. Senate seat in 2020.

U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander announced Monday that he won't seek re-election when his current term runs out. The Republican lawmaker has served in that role since 2003.

Alexander joins a few other well-known GOP lawmakers in announcing their upcoming departures. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch and Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker will both retire at the end of this year.

Corker's move prompted a runoff for his seat during the November midterm elections, which ended with Republican Marsha Blackburn beating out her Democrat challenger.

Some of the names that've been floated to fill Alexander's role include GOP Gov. Bill Halsam and newly-elected GOP Rep. Mark Green. So far, no formal announcements have been made.
