The Justice Department has filed suit against the state of California over its sanctuary immigration policies.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has filed against the state, Gov. Jerry Brown and his attorney general, Xavier Becerra. He says recent laws enacted by the state prevent federal agencies from following through on the Trump administration's immigration policies.

New laws in California make it hard for local law enforcement and employers to cooperate with federal agents when it comes to potential deportations.

The suit counts as Sessions' first against a state for its immigration policies.
