The Supreme Court decided Tuesday to take up a Second Amendment case for the first time in nearly a decade.
The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association is challenging a New York City provision that dictates where licensed handgun owners can take their weapons. The law currently bans owners from taking licensed handguns outside the city, meaning they can only be taken to shooting ranges within city limits.
In court documents, the association's lawyers argue the law bars a New Yorker from doing things like transporting his or her handgun to their second home for self-defense, participating in a shooting competition in a different county or even taking a gun "across the bridge to a neighboring city for target practice."
The Supreme Court will hear the case in October.
