US Treasury Explains Secretary Mnuchin's Comments On Gun Violence

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's comments Thursday seemed to break with the White House stance on the issue of gun violence.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin seemed to break with the White House on Thursday when he called for Congress to look into gun violence.

At a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, he said: "I will say, personally, I think the gun violence — it's a tragedy what we've seen yesterday, and I urge Congress to look at these issues."

The comments seemed to be out of step with President Donald Trump, who hasn't mentioned specific gun reform in regards to the Florida high school shooting Wednesday that left 17 people dead. Trump has taken a similar approach after past shootings.

But, a U.S. Treasury Department spokesman said: "Secretary Mnuchin was directly addressing Congressman [John] Lewis' question about availability of funds in the budget to address the issue of gun violence."
