The White House proposed merging the Department of Education and the Department of Labor.
Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney made the announcement at President Donald Trump's Cabinet meeting Thursday.
The merger could be a win for conservatives, who have pushed for the abolishment of the Education Department for decades. But Congress would need to approve it, and similar proposals have failed in the past.
Then-President Ronald Reagan tried abolishing the Education Department in the early 1980s, and the Republican Party promised to scrap it in 1996. Both attempts failed.
