The German automaker BMW is recalling 1.6 million of its cars worldwide. 54,700 of those are in the United States and Canada.

An investigation by the company found a leak in the emissions reduction system which, when combined with hot soot, could start a fire.

This comes after reports of vehicle fires in South Korea led BMW to recall 480,000 vehicles in Asia and Europe.

The recall includes cars made between 2010 and 2017. BMW says it will notify customers if their car needs to be repaired.
