Ford Motor Company is recalling over 1 million Focus cars in North America due to a faulty part that could lead to engine stalling.
Ford said in a press release Thursday roughly 1.5 million Focuses need to be sent in for repairs due to a malfunctioning canister purge valve. The vehicles affected include 2012 to 2018 Ford Focus models with 2-liter four-cylinder engines.
The canister purge valve is part of a vehicle's Evaporative Emission Control system. The issue with affected Focuses is that the canister purge valves can get stuck, which causes too much vacuum in the fuel system and deforms the car's fuel tank. This all results in the car not being able to start or stalling while driving.
The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration brought up complaints from owners to Ford. The company says it hasn't heard of any accidents or injuries caused by a faulty valve but still recommends owners avoid driving with less than half a tank of gas until they can take their cars to a Ford dealer for repairs. The recall is expected to start Dec. 10.
