In a trial with billions of dollars worth of consequences, AT&T and the government will go to court Monday to decide if the telecommunications giant can merge with Time Warner.

AT&T said it was acquiring Time Warner for over $85 billion in October 2016, but the U.S. Justice Department blocked the merger on antitrust grounds, setting up the legal battle.

Time Warner is a huge media enterprise, owning Warner Bros., HBO, TNT and TBS, among others. It also owns CNN, which, as you may have heard, President Donald Trump doesn't like very much.

"I am not going to give you a question," Trump said to a CNN reporter at a press conference on Jan. 11, 2017. "You are fake news."

Trump vocally opposes this merger, raising concerns he might have influenced the DOJ's independent decision, which the department denied.

The trial is expected to last weeks.
