Consumer Goods Giant Threatens To Pull Social Media Ads

Unilever's chief marketing officer says the company doesn't want to be associated with platforms that "create division and promote anger or hate."

Consumer goods giant Unilever is sending a message to online platforms like Google and Facebook: Clean up your act, or we'll pull our ads.

Chief Marketing Officer Keith Weed reportedly plans to say as much during a conference in California on Monday.

Unilever owns numerous brands including Dove soap, Lipton tea and Hellmann's mayonnaise. Weed says the company will avoid advertising on platforms "that do not protect our children or which create division in society, and promote anger or hate."

Unilever has scaled back advertising overall since April 2017 to cut costs.
