Funnyman Steve Martin was given the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award Thursday night.

"I intend to show the world exactly who I am and what I can do ... Look out! ... Never mind," Martin said in "The Pink Panther."

The 69-year-old actor, who has been in the show biz for more than 40 years, has been to the awards dinner many times to salute other people:

"But how did Tom come so far, so quickly? Well, nepotism," Martin joked at the dinner to honor Tom Hanks at 2002's award show.

"There's only one thing that could have made this night more special to me, and that's if this dinner had been in my honor," Martin said in 1982.

Was it just us, or did it seem like he really wanted the award during that last speech?

"What do you think I am, some kind of jerk or something?" Martin said in "The Jerk."

Well, this time around it was finally Martin's turn.

"I'm told one day I'll look back on this with great affection and nostalgia ... I'd hope so," Steve Martin said in "Father of the Bride."

Funny faces came to honor Steve for the 43rd Life Achievement Award, including Queen Latifah, Tina Fey, Martin Short and Sarah Silverman.

USA Today gave cred to Short for being the funniest:

"'I said to Steve, what would you be doing if you weren't a talented comedic actor?' And he said, 'Probably what you're doing.'"

Ouch. To win the award, a person must have "greatly contributed to the enrichment of American culture," according to the AFI website.

Other big names honored with the Life Achievement Award include Alfred Hitchcock, Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.

The award show honoring Martin will air on TBS June 13.
