Netflix Takes On The Impossible: Bringing Video Games To TV

The new teaser for Netflix's "Castlevania" series plays up its video game origins.

Having successfully spun bookscomics and cult TV shows into original programming, Netflix is taking on its biggest challenge yet — video games.

The company is adapting the classic NES game "Castlevania" — and Netflix's first teaser for the animated series is keen to remind you of its video game roots.

The actual teaser has some pretty flashy animation, but not many details. An accompanying press release informs us we'll be following the last of the vampire-fighting Belmont family, who is trying to save Eastern Europe from Dracula.

The show's creator says he wants it to be "dark, satirical" and "super violent." That'd be a big departure from the franchise's previous animated appearance.

Video games haven't had the best track record on the big or small screen so far. But Netflix seems pretty confident it can crack the code: It's also working on another series based on "The Witcher" video game franchise, which coincidentally also happens to involve killing monsters in an Eastern European setting.
