Watch Seth Meyers' Emmys Monologue: How'd He Do?

See the best jokes from Meyers' opening monologue, and find out how some outlets say he got overshadowed at the show.

Seth Meyers hosted the Emmys Monday night, and in his opening monologue, wasn’t afraid of poking fun at the show itself.

“We’re doing this show in part because MTV aired the VMAs last night. That’s right, MTV still has an awards show for music videos even though they no longer show music videos. That’s like network TV holding an awards show and giving all the trophies to cable and Netflix. That would be crazy.” (Video via NBC / Television Academy)

Yeah — he said the Golden Globes might have alcohol, but at the Emmys...

“Here everyone sits silently in one place and waits for the pills to kick in.” (Video via NBC / Television Academy)

Yikes. And Meyers touched on the controversy about categories in the awards this year.

“We had comedies that made you laugh and comedies that made you cry because they were dramas submitted as comedies.” (Video via NBC / Television Academy)

Oh, and those ‘Big Bang Theory’ stars big, big salaries.

“Shows like Game of Thrones...have the right idea. When your show starts getting some critical attention kill of all the main characters, otherwise before you know it you’re paying Sheldon $1 million an episode. You’re worth every penny.” (Video via NBC / Television Academy)

Seth even slammed the network the Emmys was airing on — and home to his show, "Late Night" -- NBC.

“Congratulations to HBO. More nominations tonight than any other network. Not to be outdone, NBC is also a network.” (Video via NBC / Television Academy)

As Deadline points out, Seth had promised to give a straightforward monologue that poked fun at the entertainment industry, not at specific shows or individuals.

In short, he’d said he hoped to simply avoid a trainwreck.

And that’s what he did. USA Today loved that Meyers delivered what people expected: a solid and pretty funny performance.

But is solid sufficient? Outlets pointed out moments where Meyers was outshined.

The New York Daily News noted when pal Amy Poehler — who has hosted the Golden Globes — was onstage, she overpowered Seth.

And The Washington Post pointed to Jimmy Kimmel, who came as a presenter, but had the crowd rolling with jokes about the faces in the crowd. Kimmel hosted the Emmys back in 2012.
