The dates for the 73rd Cannes Film Festival are still up in the air amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In March, organizers said they were looking at possibly holding the film festival in late June or early July. But after French President Emmanuel Macron announced he was extending the lockdown until May 11, they said that was "no longer an option."

In a statement on Tuesday, Cannes organizers said, the festival "is an essential pillar for the film industry" and while "it is clearly difficult to assume" that the festival could be held in its original form, they are exploring ways to make "Cannes 2020 real, in a way or another."

The festival was originally supposed to be held May 12 to May 23. Organizers said they hope to share soon how they plan to make this year's festival happen.
