Another Deadline Looms To Avoid Government Shutdown

Another deadline looms to avoid a government shutdown. Lawmakers have until Friday, March 23, to agree on a spending bill.

Last month, Congress agreed to increase spending on domestic and defense programs by about $300 billion over two years, but it gave itself six weeks to figure out exactly where that money will go. Now, time's up.

Health care and immigration are two sticking points that may hold up the process. But lawmakers reportedly aren't too worried about another government shutdown or temporary funding bill.

If the bill is approved, it could leave the government funded until the end of September. If not, lawmakers could pass yet another stopgap bill or shutdown.

Congress is expected to release the details of what's in the bill sometime early this week.
