Republicans considered multiple people for the position. Ryan announced he would seek the nomination less than a week ago and was officially nominated by House Republicans on Wednesday.
Ryan was elected with 236 votes. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was the Democrats' nominee. Florida Rep. Daniel Webster was Ryan's only Republican opponent. He got nine votes.
