House Speaker Paul Ryan endorsed his second-in-command, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, to succeed him.

Ryan made the endorsement in an interview with NBC, which is set to run in full on Sunday.

McCarthy unsuccessfully ran for the speakership in 2015 but withdrew after failing to gain the support of the conservative wing of his party.

Ryan said the GOP leadership team all supports McCarthy. In order to win the gavel, McCarthy will have to get a majority of the votes in the House.
