Republican Sen. Mitt Romney is proposing to give every American adult $1,000, plus other relief, to help people deal with the financial impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday, Romney said the money would "help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy." The Utah lawmaker noted that the federal government provided financial assistance during the 2001 and 2008 recessions.

Other aid in Romney's proposal includes grants to small businesses impacted by coronavirus, deferring student loans repayments and requiring insurance plans to temporarily cover telehealth.

The House passeda multi-billion dollar coronavirus aid package on over the weekend. That package makes testing free and guarantees all workers paid sick leave and family leave. It also includes provisions that boost nutrition and food assistance programs. The Senate still has to vote on it. President Donald Trump has said he supports the bill. But some GOP senators think it's not good enough, especially when it comes to helping small businesses. Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said the paid sick leave requirement will hurt small businesses.
