U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy announced Wednesday he's leaving politics behind.

The Republican from South Carolina said in a statement on Twitter, "I will not be filing for re-election to Congress nor seeking any other political or elected office; instead I will be returning to the justice system."

Gowdy is the chairman of the House oversight committee.

His decision to not seek re-election comes a little more than two weeks after he resigned from his position on the House Ethics Committee in order to lessen his "challenging workload."
