Scripps News and Decision Desk HQ project George Latimer will win the Democratic primary election for New York's 16th Congressional District, defeating U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman.

Latimer has served as the Westchester County executive since 2018.

This race pitted Latimer, a moderate, against Bowman, a progressive Democrat.

They squabbled over numerous issues, most notably the war between Israel and Hamas.

Bowman, an outspoken critic of how Israel is waging its war in Gaza, faced criticism for being anti-Israel after claiming the country was committing genocide. Thousands of people have died in Gaza, including women and children, since Israel began retaliatory attacks following Hamas' surprise attack on Oct. 7.

Latimer routinely expressed his support for Israel, earning endorsements from pro-Israel groups.

As the winner of the primary, Latimer is expected to keep the seat in the Democratic Party's hands. The district is considered a stronghold for Democrats.
