Former President Jimmy Carter says he wants to help the Trump administration in talks with North Korea.
The 93-year-old Democrat told CBS he has been briefed by the current administration following Kim Jong-un's invitation to meet with President Donald Trump.
Carter traveled to North Korea three times after leaving office: once in 1994 to negotiate with Kim Il-sung over the country's nuclear program; again in 2010 to broker the release of an American prisoner — that time with leader Kim Jong-il, and one last time in 2011.
Carter claims to have spent about 20 hours talking with North Korean leaders. He claims to "understand what they want and need."
The Trump administration plans to arrange a meeting with Kim by May. It's not yet clear where or who will meet with Kim.
