Judge Rules Congressional Democrats Have The Standing To Sue Trump

Their lawsuit alleges Trump's business dealings with China, as well as other deals, violate the constitution.

A federal judge ruled Friday that a group of nearly 200 congressional Democrats have legal standing to sue President Trump.

The group's lawsuit claims the president violated the U.S. Constitution's Emoluments Clause, which says it's illegal for any federal official to make money for themselves from foreign governments without the permission of Congress. Specifically, the suit alleges Trump's business dealings with China, as well as other deals relating to Trump Tower and his hotels, violate that rule.

The judge said if those allegations are true, then Trump would have denied Congress its right to vote, which gives Congress members the right to sue. He also denied the Trump Administration's requests to dismiss the case until more arguments are presented.

This isn't the only emoluments lawsuit Trump is facing. A federal judge allowed a similar suit by the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia to proceed back in July.
