The director of the U.S. Secret Service is stepping down.

Joseph Clancy said Tuesday he plans to retire for good in March. This comes nearly two years after former President Barack Obama summoned him back from the private sector to head the embattled agency.

He said in a message to staffers obtained by USA Today, "As all of you know, President Trump and his administration have been very supportive of this agency and of me personally which makes this a very difficult decision. My love for this agency has only complicated the decision further, but for personal reasons it is time. I look forward to spending time with my family."

At the time, the Secret Service was reeling from a few embarrassing issues, including security breaches and employee misconduct.

Clancy's departure from the agency means President Donald Trump will now choose the security chief.

According to The Washington Post, Secret Service chief operating officer George Mulligan is among the handful of people considered for the job.
