Supreme Court Says DACA Recipients In Ariz. Can Get Driver's Licenses

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that Arizona must offer driver's licenses to DACA recipients who meet the requirements.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Arizona must give driver's licenses to those protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Here's some context: The state's governor issued an executive order in 2012 that said DACA paperwork wasn't valid proof that so-called Dreamers were in the country legally — which was a requirement in Arizona to get a driver's license.

A group of DACA recipients challenged the order, and the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled in their favor, saying only the federal government can decide who's in the country legally. Then, the case went to the nation's high court.

This is just the latest in the DACA saga. As of right now, current DACA recipients are still protected and can renew their status.

The issue may come up again as Congress works on a spending plan before the government shutdown deadline on March 23 at midnight.
