The U.S. State Department's third highest-ranking official is stepping down.

According to several reports, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon told the agency he'll retire when his replacement is ready to take over.

He told reporters Wednesday: "I've decided that it is time to take a break. Thirty-five years is a long time. I've fought the good fight."

Shannon's departure is a big blow to the department. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly called him a "walking encyclopedia," saying Shannon knew a lot about dealing with developing strategies.

Shannon is the latest top diplomat to leave the State Department since President Donald Trump took office.
