The U.S. is looking into allegations that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons in recent days.

The State Department said in a statement Tuesday it's seeing signs that President Bashar al-Assad's regime is renewing its use of chemical weapons, including an alleged chlorine attack in northwest Syria earlier this week.

The U.S. is still gathering information on the reported attack. But the State Department warned if the Assad regime uses chemical weapons, the U.S. and its allies will "respond quickly and appropriately."

The Trump administration has already bombed Syria twice in response to Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons — once in 2017 and again in 2018.

The Syrian government didn't immediately respond to the U.S.'s warning.
