Chicago's Brookfield Zoo Has A New Resident — A Baby Porcupine

A baby porcupine, also known as a porcupette, was the first of his species to be born at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

He's a baby prehensile-tailed porcupine. The zoo said the baby was born on July 2 and weighed almost 1 pound.

But after his mom wouldn't let him nurse, Brookfield Zoo took matters into their own hands. Animal care and veterinary staff have been bottle-feeding him. They say he's thriving now.

The porcupette's quills were soft at birth to protect his mother, but they started hardening a few days after he was born.

The unnamed baby porcupine will be weaned from the bottle when he's about 10 weeks old and will then be brought back to his parents.
