Puan, the world's oldest Sumatran orangutan, has died at the age of 62. Veterinarians said that age-related complications were negatively affecting her quality of life.
She spent most of her life at Perth Zoo in Australia. The zoo said in a statement that wild female Sumatran orangutans rarely live past 50.
Holly Thompson, the zoo's primate supervisor, said euthanizing Puan was a hard decision to make but that it was "a respectful end for an old lady who demanded respect throughout her life."
In 2016, Guinness World Records officially recognized Puan as the world's oldest known Sumatran orangutan.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, the Sumatran orangutan is a critically endangered species.
Puan was part of a breeding program at Perth Zoo. She has 11 children and 29 surviving decedents spread around the world.
The zoo said that Puan will be remembered "as an aloof individual who lived her life on her terms."
