A heat wave that smothered five European countries last week is now blanketing Greenland — and its ice is reportedly suffering.

The island country is covered almost entirely in ice. On Wednesday, nearly 57% of that ice sheet reportedly showed signs of melt.

Over 11 billion tons of ice were reportedly lost into the ocean on Wednesday alone. That's around 4 million Olympic-size swimming pools full of water.

One scientist told The Associated Press that 50 years from now, these kind of melts could be more common because of climate change.
