Google's sister company Loon is sending balloon powered internet to Kenya.
The company made the announcement Thursday. The deal is Loon's first since spinning off into its own company earlier this month.
The balloons will float 60 thousand feet above sea level — well above air traffic, wildlife and weather — and beam internet transmitted from a local telecom company back to customers below.
The goal is to bring internet to some of the most rural parts of Kenya. The BBC reports large swaths of the country has no internet access. But there is some worry Loon's move could result in a communications monopoly.
The full details of the agreement aren't yet known, but this won't be Loon's first time providing internet in an area lacking traditional net infrastructure — the company brought service to Puerto Rico last year after Hurricane Maria knocked out much of the country's infrastructure.
