Michael Phelps is taking some time away from swimming after being arrested for driving under the influence.
Phelps posted on both his Facebook and Twitter page that the last few days have been "extremely difficult" and he is "disappointed" with himself. He said he is taking time off from his sport to focus on himself and do the work necessary to "make better decisions in the future."
Phelps' post also mentioned he'd "attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself," which several outlets read as the Olympian would be entering rehab.
Last week, the most decorated Olympian of all time was charged with driving under the influence, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines in Baltimore, Maryland.
ESPN points out Phelps' decision to take time off may not end up being a choice, as USA Swimming may suspended him over the arrest.
Phelps was previously suspended for three months by USA Swimming back in 2009 when a photo of him at a party with a bong surfaced. Phelps lost major sponsorship deals, including Kellogg, from the incident.
This is also Phelps' second DUI arrest. In 2004, he pled guilty to driving under the influence and was sentenced to 18 months probation.
And Phelps' time off from swimming comes after a short retirement. Phelps retired after the 2012 Olympics, but announced in April he was making a comeback — though it was unclear whether or not he would be competing in the 2016 Olympics.
Phelps has 22 Olympic medals — 18 of which are gold. He retired after the 2012 Olympics, but came back in April this year.
In August, he won three gold medals and two silver medals at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia.
