Two aviation safety organizations say 2017 was the safest year on record for commercial air travel.

Aviation consulting firm To70 and the Air Safety Network tracked crashes for different types of planes. Both firms noted zero fatal crashes in large commercial passenger jets for the entire year.

To70 reported 111 civil aviation accidents, including two regional plane crashes resulting in 13 deaths.

That group didn't track some of the smaller airplane crashes, including the New Year's Eve plane crash in Costa Rica that left 12 people dead.
