Appeals Court Grants Temporary Stay In President's Tax Return Case

An appeals court said a judge's order requiring the president to disclose his tax information warrants further review.

A federal appeals court has granted President Donald Trump an emergency stay from a court order that would've required his accounting firm to hand over his tax returns.

Earlier Monday, a federal judge threw out a lawsuit the president filed to keep his tax returns away from New York prosecutors. The judge said he couldn't endorse "such a categorical and limitless assertion of presidential immunity."

But President Trump's lawyers immediately filed an appeal, and the appeals court granted a temporary stay of decision. That means the president doesn't have to hand over the documents in question until the court completes an "expedited review" of the case.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. subpoenaed eight years' worth of President Trump's personal and corporate tax returns from accounting firm Mazars USA. His office has been investigating the Trump Organization and looking into payments allegedly made on the president's behalf to Stormy Daniels.
