At least three people are dead after a small plane crashed into two homes in Southern California.

"This is supposedly a happy time and then just to have a tragic incident like this .... It's really a sad case for us," Riverside Fire Chief Michael Moore said.

According to authorities, the aircraft had just taken off from Riverside Municipal Airport when it went down Monday afternoon.

Officials say there were five people on board the plane. They were traveling back to San Jose after attending a cheerleading competition at Disneyland.

Riverside's fire chief said no one in either home or on the ground was injured in the crash. The two injured passengers were taken to a local hospital. One sustained minor injuries, and the other is in "very" critical condition.

The cause of the crash is still unclear, and the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
