At least seven people are dead and 10 are injured after an SUV crashed into people waiting at a bus stop in the border city of Brownsville, Texas.

Authorities originally received a call around 8:30 a.m. about a major traffic accident, investigator Martin Sandoval with the Brownsville Police Department said in a Facebook Live video.

The incident took place near the Ozanam Center, a shelter for migrants and homeless people.

The director of that shelter told the Associated Press most of the victims are Venezuelan men, and surveillance video from the shelter shows the SUV running a red light seconds before hitting people.

Police say they're looking into whether the crash was an accident or intentional and whether the driver was intoxicated.

The Brownsville police investigator says the driver suffered injuries when the SUV rolled over, but he will go to jail once he's out of the hospital.

"The driver was detained by officers, and he's getting medical care right now as we speak. The investigation is still ongoing. And right now, he's facing at least a charge of reckless driving. But more than likely, there's going to be other charges coming on later on in the day. We're also doing our due diligence, which means that we're actually trying to see if he's intoxicated or not intoxicated. So, we're running all those tests as well," said Sandoval.

Officials say there were no passengers in the SUV.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
