Authorities In Several Countries Take Down GozNym Cybercrime Network

Police in multiple countries have dismantled a complex cybercrime network that used malware in an attempt to steal millions of dollars from victims around the world.

Authorities from the U.S., Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, Bulgaria, Europol and Eurojust announced the takedown during a press conference in the Netherlands on Thursday.

Officials say the network used phishing emails to infect tens of thousands of computers with the malware, which is known as GozNym. Once those emails were opened, hackers were able to record victims' keystrokes, take their banking login information and steal money from their accounts.

The malware infected more than 41,000 computers, and the network tried to steal an estimated $100 million. It's unclear how much money was actually taken.

Ten of the network's members are facing multiple charges in the U.S., including conspiracy to commit computer fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
