The popular e-cigarette brand Juul Labs Inc. is reportedly at the center of a federal criminal investigation.

People familiar with the probe told the Wall Street Journal that the investigation is being handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Northern District of California, but it's unclear what exactly investigators may be looking into.

News of the possible probe comes as officials in Kansas announced another death linked to vaping, bringing the number of vaping-related deaths in the U.S. to nine.

The CDC and the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations are still investigating why hundreds of people have come down with vaping-related lung illnesses.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced a plan to ban the sale of vaping products with flavors other than tobacco. Juul said then that it agreed "with the need for aggressive category-wide action on flavored products."
