An explosive device was found near billionaire philanthropist George Soros' home on Monday.

Police say it was left in the mailbox at his Bedford, New York, residence. Authorities safely detonated the device. Soros wasn't home at the time of the incident.

Soros is a wealthy political activist known for donating to Democratic causes and candidates, which has made him a target of conservative groups.

The FBI's New York branch tweeted Monday evening that it was investigating "at and around" a Bedford, New York, residence, but that there was no threat to the public. The FBI didn't give further information.

The local police department said it got a call about a suspicious package after someone at the home opened it and found what looked like an explosive device. The motive behind the device is unclear.
