State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert might be getting a new gig within the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump confirmed to reporters Thursday that Nauert is one of the candidates in the running to become the next U.S. ambassador to the UN.

"She is under very serious consideration. She's excellent. She's been with us a long time," Trump said.

Nauert would replace Nikki Haley, who unexpectedly announced back in October that she'd be leaving her post at the end of the year.

Nauert's reportedly already met with the president about the role. A former Fox News host, she joined the State Department in April 2017 and has served as the spokesperson for both Secretaries of State Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo.

Other candidates President Trump is reportedly considering for the position include the U.S. ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and Kay Bailey Hutchinson, who currently serves as the U.S. permanent representative to NATO. The Senate will need to confirm whoever he nominates.

The president said Thursday he would announce his decision next week.
