The school resource officer assigned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School never went into the building during last week's shooting, according to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.

Israel said Thursday that Deputy Scot Peterson was suspended without pay and subsequently decided to resign and file for retirement.

Israel said Peterson was inside the school in another building when the shooting began. Israel said Peterson went to the building where the shooting was happening and stayed outside while shots were fired. When a reporter asked Israel what Peterson should have done instead, Israel said this:

"Went in. Addressed the killer. Killed the killer."

There are still a lot of questions about what agencies got to the building first and whether or not law enforcement violated policy in failing to follow up on red flags about the shooter. Two other Broward County sheriff's deputies are under investigation in connection to those questions.
