National security adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster might leave the White House.

CNN reports the Pentagon is conducting a search for a military position for McMaster in the Defense Department or the Army. Officials are reportedly looking for a job that would let the three-star general receive his fourth star.

CNN says things have been tense between President Donald Trump and McMaster for months.

On Saturday, Trump criticized McMaster on Twitter after the national security adviser said there was "incontrovertible" evidence that Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

McMaster joined the White House last year after Trump's previous national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned over his contacts with the Russian ambassador.

In January, McMaster shut down rumors he was leaving his post and said it's "a tremendous honor to do this job every day."
