In the midst of an investigation into potential election fraud, the vice chairman of a North Carolina county board of elections has abruptly resigned.

Jens Lutz announced his resignation from the Bladen County Board of Elections in an email sent Friday. Bladen County has become central to the North Carolina State Board of Elections' investigation centering on irregularities having to do with absentee ballots.

The investigation comes after Republican Mark Harris beat Democrat Dan McCready by just 905 votes in a November 9th Congressional District race. The state board has already refused to certify the results of the election twice and may order a new election if evidence of fraud is found.

In his email to state and county board members, Lutz wrote, "I regret having to do this but things have gotten way out of hand."

There are plans for the state board to hold an evidentiary hearing on or before Dec. 21.
