"We've talked long enough about putting New Jersey on a responsible path to $15 an hour minimum wage. Today, we start our way on this path," New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.
New Jersey is officially the latest state to raise its minimum wage.
During a press conference Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation that will gradually bump the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2024.
The governor's office said the first increase from $8.85 to $10 an hour is set to happen on July 1. And the change will affect more than 1 million workers in New Jersey.
California, Massachusetts, New York and the District of Columbia are also working their way up to a $15 an hour minimum wage. And other states — like Arizona, Colorado, Maine and Missouri — are phasing in minimum wage increases that will eventually reach $12 an hour in the next few years.
