N.M. Shooting Update: 2 Students Injured, Suspect In Custody

At least two students were injured and one suspect taken into custody after a school shooting at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico.

Authorities say a 12-year-old boy was critically wounded in the shooting … KRQE reports “a 13-year-old girl was also critically hurt in this school shooting. She was taken to a hospital in Roswell.” (Via KRQE)

Police identified the shooter as a 12-year-old boy in 7th grade.They say he had a shotgun and started shooting in the school’s gym. (Via NBC)

Gov. Susana Martinez said a staff member was also injured in the shooting and had minor injuries.

The shooting happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Albuquerque Journal reports a student saw a male student get shot in the face.

And according to Fox News, another witness said she was talking to a security guard when she heard a gunshot and later saw a student on the floor.

After the shooting, the school was placed on lockdown and children were taken to a nearby mall, where parents could come get them. (Via USA Today)

Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting and say they do not currently know the suspect’s motive. A prayer vigil will be held at Roswell Convention Center at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
