"We need the communities that are most effective to begin finding available beds," Cuomo said.
On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced he will use the National Guard to work with unions and private developers to create temporary medical facilities for coronavirus patients.
Cuomo said considering the growth of coronavirius cases, he doesn't "believe we're going to be able to flatten the curve enough to meet the capacity of the health care system."
Cuomo said empty spaces, like dormitories or former nursing homes, could be converted to medical facilities. So far, there are nearly 1,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state of New York. Cuomo said he hopes to create around 5,000 additional beds in New York City as the virus spreads.
Cuomo also said New York may soon cancel non-critical elective surgeries.
