Poll Finds Many People Want A Plan To Help Immigrants Become Legal

A CNN/ORC International poll found many Americans don't think deportation should be a top priority.

A new CNN/ORC International poll says many Americans don't exactly agree with the Trump administration's stance on deporting undocumented immigrants.

The poll looked at roughly 1,000 people and found over 70 percent believe authorities should not try to deport people that are living in the country illegally.

Twenty-seven percent of people polled thought they should.

President Donald Trump has long promised mass deportation of undocumented people living in the states, especially during his campaign.

But according to this poll, a majority of Americans don't think deportation should be a priority at all.

Instead, they think the government should develop a plan to help undocumented people who have jobs become legal residents. But if his rhetoric is any indication, it doesn't seem like the president would be too keen on that.

"You can't just smuggle in, hunker down and wait to be legalized; it's not going to work that way," Trump said.

Only 13 percent of people polled were actually in favor of deporting immigrants already in the U.S. illegally. And 26 percent thought the government should focus on keeping immigrants from entering illegally, rather than kicking people out.
